If there were ever a picture worth 1000 words, this would be the one. Here we see Eve, the first woman, and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary, great with child, is comforting Eve, who allowed the enemy’s lies to lure her. And as a result of Adam and Eve’s decision to eat the fruit, which Eve holds, sin entered the world.
Yet, nestled in this familiar story is a promise that may be less familiar – the promise of a coming Savior.
Did you notice the serpent, entangling Eve’s legs, is also under the foot of Mary?
When God pronounced the curse on Eve in Genesis 3:15, He also promised that Eve’s Seed would one day crush the head of the serpent.
The Serpent is Satan, and the Seed of Eve is Jesus, whose life, death, and glorious resurrection crushed the head of the serpent and offered redemption to a fallen world.
And what strikes me is that both women pictured here are carriers of the Seed. To Eve, God promised the Redeemer would one day come, and to Mary, God promised the Redeemer would be her Son.
He is the Savior, Christ, and Lord. His name is Jesus.
